In Africa, there are now fewer Giraffes than Elephants or Gorillas, and are already considered 'Extinct in the Wild' in seven of Africa's countries. Currently, elephants outnumber giraffes 4-1. In 2016, they were listed as vulnerable, but their struggles have failed to get the worlds attention even with celebrity advocates, and wildlife conservation in general gaining more traction. Within the past 3 decades, the Giraffe population has decreased 38%. Half of giraffe calves make it passed their first year.
Their population is decreasing due to a number of issues including but not limited to; deforestation, agricultural farming, killing them for meat, killing them for their pelts, and urban development.
The Northern Giraffe has the lowest population out of the four species residing in Africa, of 5,600. That number is divided by the three subspecies of Northern Giraffe, the Kordofan, Nubian, and West African. The Kordofan Giraffe has a population of 2,000, and that number is rapidly decreasing. They are listed as 'Critically Endangered'. The Nubian Giraffe has a population of 3,000, and their population is slightly increasing. Though they are still considered 'Critically Endangered'. The West African Giraffe only has a population of 600, and luckily, their population is also slightly increasing. They are considered a 'Vulnerable' species.
The Reticulated Giraffe has an estimated population of 17,780, and they're listed as 'Endangered'. Their population is decreasing due to some of the reasons listed above.
The Masai Giraffe has an estimated population of 35,000, and they're listed as 'Endangered'. Their population is rapidly decreasing.
