So back at the start of the pandemic when 'acrylic pours' became super popular, I decided to give it a try to see how I'd like it! Not that I would've switched to that but just to have another technique under my belt. I did a few of them and while it was fun, I felt like the paint did all the work, which I didn't like. So I went back to my normal ways of doing things. Over the next year or so I looked at the canvases I used and tried to figure out if there was anything I could make from them. This canvas really caught my attention! With both the gold stripes, and the spots, I knew I either wanted to make it into a Leopard or Zebra, and I was pulled towards the Zebra the most! I started thinking about how I wanted to do it, and I knew I wanted the stripes to show through but I also wanted it to be recognizable as a Zebra. So I decided that I would do almost like a wash for the white stripes, and then leave the rest but do details in the eye and muzzle. And because the way our brains work, it fills the rest in and tells us that's a Zebra!
I can't even tell you how excited I am about this piece. As you all have seen, I don't work with abstract things a lot, the first and only one before this being a Scarlet Macaw. So there was (and is) a lot of inner conflict telling me that I need more detail. I knew I didn't want to add detail though because of the look I was going for. But the way that the stripes show through and makes the Zebra look ghostly and dreamlike is just 😍😍!!
